Richmond Co. to use unconventional method to clean around ponds

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

Augusta may soon be looking into an unconventional method to maintain the hundreds of retention ponds around the city.

City officials said they will use goats to help with grassy areas around the pond. There are over 800 ponds in Richmond County and many of them are overgrown and difficult to treat. Officials said they will initially place a few goats for testing.

"This will be a test pilot program," said Randy Wishard, the Environmental Health County Manager. "We're looking at 3 or 4 goats per retention pond and we're looking to do probably 2 to 4 retention ponds, just study how well it did, how fast they eat and what it all involved."

Officials said the goats will be placed inside a fenced and locked in area around the ponds and will be monitored closely.
