ECSO: Pets left to starve in locked home

EFFINGHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

An Effingham County man was arrested Wednesday night after deputies say they found three cats dead inside his home, another clinging to life, and a dog on the brink of starvation.

"There's no reason for animals to be treated like this," Effingham County Sheriff Jimmy McDuffie said. "It's just intolerable."

Neighbors say no one has been living at the home in the Stonebridge subdivision since before Thanksgiving.

Wednesday, they heard a cat mewing inside and called the Sheriff's office.

"You could hear it from the sidewalk," neighbor Ben Weiss said.

The pets' owner, 39-year-old Harry Fields, is being charged with felony animal cruelty.

McDuffie says he doesn't understand why anyone would leave animals locked inside a home.

"You can open the door and let the dogs and cats out if you're not going to do anything else," he said.
