CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

The Truman Parkway $67.5 million extension is scheduled to open next month.

The long awaited fifth and final phase of the Truman Parkway extension project is scheduled to open on Feb. 28. It connects Whitfield Avenue to the Abercorn Street extension on Savannah's south side. Community leaders broke ground on the extension in 2010.

Chatham County spokesman Pete Nichols told WTOC that ribbon cutting ceremony will be held at 3:30 p.m. Feb. 28.

People have been talking about connecting downtown Savannah to south side since the 1920s. By the 1960s development was reconsidered. In the 1980s, it started to become reality. In 1990, ground was broken on the Truman parkway and by 2005, President Street was connected all the way to Whitfield Avenue. After more than 80 years, the final step was taken in 2010.
