Church drops Boy Scouts, charters with new group

STATESBORO, GA (WTOC) -

First Baptist Church of Statesboro was one of the first churches in the area to charter with Boy Scouts of America.

The church's pastor tells WTOC they allowed their annual charter to expire at the end of 2013 after the BSA adopted policy that allows homosexual members.

"This was not a knee jerk reaction. It wasn't something that we hastily decided. But with prayer and thoughtful guidance, we made the decision that there would be a better way, explained Dr. John Waters.

The church chose to align with Trail Life USA, a new organization started by those who oppose BSA's new policy.

"As well as Boy Scouts served us before, we think Trail Life will serve us even better. Trail Life is distinctly Christian. It has a very strong Biblical foundation. I think it will fit the culture of our church and the families of this community," Waters added.

Local organizers will host an informational meeting January 25 at 5pm in the church's Woodrow Street parking lot.
