SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Bob Neumann is still studying, but after a life in academics, the Landings resident is now looking for ways to introduce others to the benefits of education.

"Many of our applicants are people who are struggling,'' says Neumann. "They're working, they're going to school part-time, so they're struggling.''

The Landings Scholarship Fund has helped ease those struggles for the last 20 years.

Neumann is chairman of the fund that distributes roughly $40,000 a year in scholarship money to Landings Club employees and their dependent children.

"It's great to know the people, because you don't just see them as just servers or tennis court attendants or golf course attendants,'' said Neumann, who has been on the fund's selection committee since the 1990s and has been chairman for six years. "You see them as people, people who are striving to improve themselves. And I think that's what our job is, to help them achieve their goals.''

Nueman is a former teacher, principal and school superintendent. He also spent 32 years in the Marines and Marine Reserves and now offers divorce mediation at the Mediation Center of the Coastal Empire.

Neumann has always worked toward goals, and he has always kept active.

"Well, to me, it's always been a way of life,'' he says. "I don't know how I would exist if I didn't do these things.''

Now he is actively helping realize the goals of others through scholarships that are funded entirely by donations from Landings residents.

"Every year, I'm impressed with how generous our donors are,'' says Neumann. "Many of our employee candidates for scholarship are people who have left school earlier, have come back and now need a little help.''
