Hundreds of Evans County citizens gathered early Monday morning for breakfast and inspiration.

The annual Catherine Bacon breakfast kicked off the King holiday as organizers remember one of the woman who served faithfully on the local level during the civil rights movement.

"As Dr. King was the leader or general, she was one of the soldiers who served," explained Willie J. Hall, president of the Evans County NAACP chapter.

During the centennial birth year for Evans County, the program also focused on the community's history. In additon, the recognized Captain Albert Baker, an officer with the Navy.

"When you look at Dr. King's dream, someone who's risen to the rank of Captain in the U.S. Navy gives relevance to that and show's what is possible," Hall added.

The breakfast also honored 2014 King parade grand marshal Adolphus "Pop" Oglesby, a long time Claxton high teacher and coach.
