CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

There's a light at the end of the tunnel for alleviation of traffic jams on Georgia State Route 21 in and out of Chatham and Effingham counties.

A proposal for a new flyover design was unveiled Tuesday for the interchange. It's called a diverging diamond.

Plans call for the road to be widened starting at GA 30 past 95 to Hendly Road.

State transportation board member Ann Purcell unveiled a long awaited project for the Port Wentworth exit or 95 and 21 at a Pooler lunch and learn session on Tuesday afternoon.

"This is preliminary as you probably noticed in big letters on top," she said.

Preliminary or not, businesses in Port Wentworth like Tanglez Salon say something is better than nothing.

"Everyone's coming in the same direction at the same time, and they just have nowhere to go, they're just sitting and waiting," said Kim Maxey, of Tanglez in Port Wentworth.

The design is relatively new to traffic design. The first one in the U.S. was in Missouri in 2009 - and there's a well traveled one in the Atlanta area - built in 2011.

The diverging diamond is based on the idea that if you can eliminate the need for left-turn arrows - then signals will have maximum efficiency and fewer conflict points.

"Which have worked out wonderfully to move traffic, help congestion tremendously, and so the proposal that is being looked at, would possibly be able to be let in June 2015," Purcell said.

A plan and date may help Tanglez attract more heads in their chairs.

"I do think it would help because people wouldn't avoid the area at the time, because when you're running late for something, you get anxious and don't want to wait," Maxey said.

This is in the very preliminary stages of planning. There's nothing on the books yet.
