Chesterfield Police investigate multiple indecent exposures

Posted: Updated:
CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -

Chesterfield Police are investigating three incidents of indecent exposures in shopping areas, in the past week.

There have been three reports of a man masturbating in a shopping center parking lot at Walmart, Steinmart, and near a Fresh Market.

Police reports indicate all three crimes happened between 1pm and 3pm, but suspect descriptions are not a match. At this point, police don't believe they're related.

One victim spoke to NBC12, saying she is just 19 years old and was on a break near the Fresh Market and Office Depot parking lot when the suspect pulled up in a car and looked right at her as he masturbated.

She said he was in a dark SUV, and when she realized what was happening, she ran inside the store for help and he drove away.

Police say she did get a detailed description. The suspect is said to be a white man, about 35 to 45 years old and 6'2" with an average build.

The suspect was also described as having long, shaggy, sandy-colored hair and a mustache. He was also said to be wearing jeans and a white shirt.

Police say there have only been eight similar cases in the last year, including the three in the past week. Three of those cases have been closed by arrest.

They did share some helpful tips should you find yourself in this unfortunate situation.

It may seem counter-intuitive, but if you're in a public place and feel safe, pull out your camera and start snapping pictures. Police say the camera often prompts the suspect to stop and leave, and the picture could be useful for catching the suspect.

If you can't snap a quick picture, try writing down the make of the vehicle and the license plate. Call police as soon as safely possible after the incident.
