STATESBORO, GA (WTOC) -

Steve Pennington has added incentive to watch the Super Bowl; a familiar face on one of the sidelines.

The Statesboro High football coach has exchanged calls and text messages with Denver Bronco defensive end, and Statesboro High alum, Jeremy Mincey.

"It's certainly something for a coach to be proud of when you see one of your students get to the biggest stage," Pennington said.

Last year, another of Pennington's former players made it to the same stage. DeAngelo Tyson earned a Super Bowl ring with the Baltimore Ravens.

But Mincey's road to this stage has been rocky. He was drafted by and cut by the New England Patriots in 2006.

He was picked up and cut by the San Fransisco 49'ers.

He played seven years with the Jacksonville Jaguars, endured injury and recovery, only to be cut.

His first season with the Broncos sends him to the championship game.

"He's the most persistent person I've ever seen," the coach said proudly. "The fact that he's overcome so many things says a lot about him and hopefully it says something to younger people who have a dream to do something great."
