Effginham Elementary redistricting

EFFINGHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

Possible changes could be coming for students in Effingham County to help with over crowding.

The Board of Education is proposing redistricting the borders for three elementary schools - Blandford, Ebenezer and Rincon.

The move would affect nearly 200 students and allow all the elementary schools in the district to have the same number of students.

Superintendent Randy Shearhouse said parents still could take advantage of "school choice," which allows them to send their children to any school in the district, if they provide transportation and there is room at the school.

"The reason we look at redistricting, especially redistricting for Blandford, is they have 841 students currently. You still only have one nurse there. Rincon currently has 637 students. They have one nurse. You have one technology teacher. You don't have room to add a teacher there, so you need to move students to make it equal throughout the district,"he said.

The board will host a public hearing for parents Thursday at Rincon Elementary school at 7 p.m. about the changes. A decision is expected to be made by February and go into effect in the Fall of 2014.
