Effingham Co. teens behind bars for school burglary

EFFINGHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

Two Effingham County teens are behind bars Wednesday at the Effingham County Jail after Sheriff's deputies said they tried to burglarize a school.

Just before midnight Tuesday, deputies responded to South Effingham Middle School after an alarm was set off.

While inside, deputies spotted two males, who began to run. The young men led the deputies on a foot chase across Hwy 30 when one of the suspects, South Effingham High student Elliot Boyle actually jumped into a pond that was across from the school.

Investigators say Boyle refused to come out of the pond for about 20 minutes. He was later taken to Memorial where he was treated for hypothermia.

The second suspect, Michael Wegmann later turned himself in.

Sherriff's Deputy David Ehsanipor said, "Anybody that's just going to be bold, to go into the school like that, much less go and jump into a pond, he obviously didn't make the best decision in the world and now he has to pay for his consequences."

Boyle is being held on a $9,000 dollar bond. The other teen is waiting for his bond hearing.
