STATESBORO, GA (WTOC) -

Former United States ambassador, Atlanta mayor and aide to Martin Luther King,Jr.,  Andrew Young spoke to college students about the past and the future.

Young's visit to Georgia Southern University was part of the school's holiday observance of Dr. King's birthday. He spoke on Dr. King's use of a Biblical parable in relation to the civil rights movement.

"Dr. King said he liked the story of the Good Samaritan, but he didn't want to be one," Young recalled. "He didn't want to tend to people after they'd been beaten up and robbed. He wanted to fix the Jericho Road so it didn't happen."

Young said King's dream involved empowerment through access to education and the creation of economic opportunity. He talked about becoming mayor of Atlanta and traveling around the world to convince internatonal companies to come to Georgia.

He urged students to apply their talents to the opportunities of the near future and to do what they can to help other people.

Prior to the speech, Young spoke to the media and explained that each milestone of his career came with challenges and rewards.
