Ice blankets RVA side roads

RVA School districts gave a "hands up" for snow day number three. A factor in the decision was undoubtedly side roads blanketed with snow. School buses still have to travel over secondary streets to pick up children. One tire slipping on ice could be all it takes for a nasty accident.

Wednesday night, road crews are treating large patches of ice, on some of the quietest roads. Trucks are pouring salt and sand over some blocks, which neighbors say haven't yet been touched.

"(The roads) are very bad, very icy. I almost went over in a ditch last night, actually," said Charletta Robinson, of her quiet block.

Parents we talked to are backing the decision to call off school for another day.

"I think it's a very safe decision," said Henrico dad Mounir Jerrdi. "The bus is going to be driving on the side roads. So that's what we mostly worry about."

"Luckily for us, we have a four wheel drive so, it's a little bit easier. My son has a Honda Civic that he drove to work today, so it was a little bit scary," said mom Stacy Vigue-Adair.

VDOT and Richmond city crews say they're working around the clock, aiming to treat each and every road.
