The Naval Hospital Beaufort announced it will be realigning the services it provides in order to better meet the needs of the local community.

The changes are the result of a recently held Continental U.S. (CONUS) Hospital Report, according to Naval Hospital officials.

Vice Adm. Matthew L. Nathan, U.S. Navy Surgeon General, said in a news release, "the study was designed to ensure that Navy Medicine continues to provide exceptional health care services to all beneficiaries. As a decade of war winds down and beneficiary populations shift, Navy Medicine must look at how and where we are providing services to ensure we are aligned to best meet the needs of our patients and staff."

Capt. Anne M. Lear, Naval Hospital and Naval Support Facility Beaufort commanding officer, stated that although the hospital is going through changes, it will not close.

"Navy Medicine Senior Leadership recommended realignment of personnel or the reallocation of resources to achieve this goal. Beneficiary populations have shifted, and the Navy's medical resources must shift as well. This optimization will lead to changes that ensure we have the right mix of personnel and services to meet the medical needs of our Sailors, Marines, family members, and retirees," said Lear.

In order to reach those goals, NH Beaufort will be shifting its Obstetrics/Gynecology services to the network, closing its Emergency Room, reducing its surgical services; while expanding care to enrolled service members and families through their medical homeport clinic.

The realignment will take place gradually over the next several months and should be completed no later than June 30. Officials say all efforts will be made to ensure quality patient care is maintained and support of Beaufort remains a community priority.
