ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Dougherty County School Police believe 16 year-old Rico Fields shot 16-year-old Brenton Helstock in the left arm shortly after school last Friday afternoon.

Authorities say the conflict began on campus, then Fields drove up and confronted Helstock on Tift Avenue next to Hugh Mills Stadium.

Police say they got into a fight and Fields pulled out a small caliber handgun and opened fire.

Several people are facing charges.

"We don't have a tally yet. It's still an ongoing investigation," said Chief investigator J.C. Phillips with Dougherty County Schools Police. "There's some gang affiliation that's suspected so it could get even much more extensive."

The suspected gunman is being held at Regional Youth Detention Center on two counts of aggravated assault. More charges are pending.

18 year-old Qais Griffin, who was with the victim, was also arrested on an outstanding credit card fraud charges in Florida.

A woman and two men were arrested after police found marijuana in car during a search.

Other suspected gang members could also be charged with obstructing the investigation.
