BCSO: 72 vehicle break-ins so far in 2014

The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office is urging residents to keep their vehicles located and to keep their keys with them to deter vehicle break-ins.

Since the beginning of 2014, 72 vehicles have been broken into in northern Beaufort County. In all of the cases, the vehicles were left unlocked and there had been no forced entry involved, according to the sheriff's office.

The thefts typically occur overnight between 12-5 a.m. No suspects have been identified, but several witnesses have reported seeing one or more suspicious white males walking and/or driving through neighborhoods, according to the BCSO.

The break-ins have occurred in these areas: Cat Island, Battery Shores, Iron Gate, Mink Point, Royal Pines, Shell Point, and Tanglewood.

Sheriff's Office investigators continue to work closely with Beaufort Police Dept. investigators as similar thefts are occurring within both jurisdictions.

The sheriff's office urges residents to avoid leaving any valuable items in vehicles overnight.

Residents are being asked to be on the lookout for and immediately report any suspicious person(s) or activity observed by calling the Beaufort County Dispatch Center at 843.524.2777 or Crimestoppers.
