Fatal fire started with lighter

Posted: Updated:

Investigators said they now believe the fire that killed a 4-year-old Monday started with a lighter and a pillow and bedding.

Alma police chief Brandon Sellers tells WTOC the investigators believe a lighter started the fire in the bedroom of Jarquavious Alston. Sellers said Alton and his brother were playing in the room and it is the same room where Jarquavious' body was found after the fire.

On Tuesday, Sellers said the parents told investigators the three year old woke them to warn them about fire in the house. The parents could not reach Jarquavious and barely escaped themselves. The fire remains under investigation.
