Bad transformer knocks out power overnight on the islands

Electricity was out for many residents on Wilmington Island overnight, and several outages still remain.

According to Georgia Power, the outages were due to a bad transformer. Right now, crews are bringing a new transformer out to replace it.

A total of 170 customers were without power early Friday morning. A viewer from the Betz Creek Plantation called WTOC around 1:30 a.m. to report that her entire street was out.

Officials say the weather and the increased demand could be behind the transformer going out.

Georgia Power says power is being restored to most customers affected, but about 20 customers will remain without power for the next couple of hours while crews install the new transformer.
