OKATIE, SC (WTOC) -

The Beaufort-Jasper Water and Sewer Authority are fighting a rare winter algae growth in its reservoir and canal in the Lowcountry.

Algae have left the tap water for residents in northern Beaufort County with a bad taste and odor.

Officials have been adding copper-sulfate to the Chelsea Reservoir to treat the water.

Officials say the water remains safe to drink, and meets all EPA and SCDHEC standards.
