Man defrauds FEMA following 2011 tornado

LAS VEGAS, NV (WSHM) -

A former Massachusetts man was arrested in Las Vegas, NV last week on charges of defrauding FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) following the June 1, 2011 tornado that hit central Massachusetts, according to Tom Carson of the U.S. Department of Justice.

A federal grand jury returned an indictment Thursday charging 41-year-old Robbie Rossi with two counts of mail fraud arising from a scheme to fraudulently receive disaster relief funds from FEMA, Carson said.

Rossi allegedly received more than $12,000 in disaster relief funds after he provided documentation that falsely stated he and a roommate lived at a residence on New Bridge Street in West Springfield that had been damaged by the storm.

Rossi reportedly told FEMA he lived at 71 New Bridge St.; however, that address does not exist. He received checks from August 2011 until April 2013 at various addresses, including a residence in Enfield, CT.

Rossi is waiting to be extradited from Nevada to Connecticut.

If convicted, Rossi could face a maximum prison sentence of 30 years on each count.
