Deputies on the lookout for Tattnall jail escapees

Posted: Updated:

Tattnall County Sheriff's deputies told WTOC the best thing people can do is lock their doors, their cars, even barns and tool sheds until they find a pair of inmates who broke out of jail.

Around midnight Friday, Chad Dasher and Raymond Smith got into a ceiling area for water/sewer pipes and made their way to the crawl space where the metal roof connects to concrete walls.

They opened a seam and lowered themselves down on a rope of bed sheets.

"Our jailers discovered them missing around 5:30 this [Friday] morning during a head count," explained Lt. Kevin Keyfauver.

Smith was in jail on charges of child molestation. Dasher was jailed on burglary and other charges after a string of home break-ins and intense chases where he eluded arrest for two weeks.

"We have no reason to believe they are armed, but Dasher has a history of burglarizing homes and taking fire arms and anything else," Keyfauver added.

He cautioned residents in Tattnall and surrounding counties to keep doors locked, from their houses to cars or trucks, even outside buildings.

"He's been known to steal anything, especially if it has a motor. He's stolen vehicles, ATV's, even tractors and used them to stay on the run," Keyfauver urged.

Anyone with information about the men is asked to call the sheriff's office at 912.557.6778.
