MIDWAY, GA (WTOC) -

Liberty County Sheriff's deputies are still investigating a shooting that happened late Friday night in Midway.

Roger Young was shot and wounded while visiting a female friend on Dogwood Lane.

According to Liberty County Sheriff's Office Detective Julie Hibbeler, the woman shared the Dogwood Lane home with her former boyfriend, Scott Simmons.

Simmons arrived at the residence around 11:30 p.m. and demanded Young leave, which he did.

Moments later, Young spoke with the woman over the phone who told him she was afraid to remain in the residence with Simmons and asked him to come back and pick her up.

According to Hibbeler, Young stood on the porch to wait for the woman when Simmons allegedly took an ax handle and struck Young on the head.

The glass door in between the two men closed, and then Simmons fired a shot at Young through the door, hitting him in his left thigh.

Young was then airlifted to Memorial Health University Medical Center, and is expected to recover.

Hibbeler says Simmons faces an aggravated assault charge and cruelty to children, because the incident took place in front of a nine-year-old.

Simmons is currently being held in the Liberty County Jail.

This is an ongiong investigation, and anyone with information is asked to call the Liberty County Sheriff's Office.
