The Red Flag Fire Alert in
Columbia that has been in force since Saturday morning has been lifted by the
South Carolina Forestry Commission.
The improving weather conditions
prompted fire managers to end the alert. Calmer winds and higher relative
humidity values mean fire is less likely to spread.
We are in the season for
wildfires in the Southeast, so care should be taken with all forms of outdoor
burning to prevent them.
During the alert, SCFC personnel
responded to 51 fires statewide, and no injuries have been reported. The ban may not have been lifted in certain jurisdictions.
Always check with your local
fire officials before conducting any type of burn.
South Carolina law requires
anyone who is planning to conduct debris burns or controlled burns to contact
the Commission in advance.
