Winter storm watch in effect through Wednesday

Posted: Updated:

A winter storm watch has been issued in Georgia and in the Lowcountry with yet another blast of cold arctic air making its way across the country.

This cold front could set records in some areas.

Meteorologists say temperatures in the Midwest states will be from the teens to below zero with wind chills as low as forty below.

Blowing snow with winds up to 60 miles-per-hour made it almost impossible to travel outside in South Dakota on Sunday.

Locally, a winter storm watch is in effect from Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday afternoon for the following counties: Chatham, Bryan, Effingham, Liberty, Bulloch, Screven, Candler, Evans, Tattnall, Appling, Bacon, Wayne, Long, McIntosh, Hampton, Jasper, and Beaufort.

Freezing rain, snow and sleet are possible in these areas. Significant ice, snow and sleet accumulation will create dangerous or impossible driving conditions. Damage to trees, power lines and even structures is possible, as well as widespread power outages which could produce life-threatening situations.

Now is the time to prepare for this winter storm. Officials say that once the storm begins, conditions will deteriorate rapidly and travel will become dangerous or impossible. Residents should prepare to remain in a safe shelter, obtain vital supplies such as potable water, non-perishable food items, medicine, batteries, flashlights, a battery powered radio and an alternate heat source such as a generator or non-electric space heater or wood for your fireplace.
