Two days each week, every Wednesday and Sunday, Roland Waller welcomes people to the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum and into his world.

"I wore the uniform actually, 27 years in the reserves and the guard, so I just have a feeling for veterans and that type of thing,'' said Waller. "I feel the responsibility to give back, I certainly do.''

Waller is continuously exercising that responsibility as a member of several veterans organizations, which often dovetail together.

"I got very interested in the history of the Mighty Eighth, especially it being born at the Chatham Artillery Armory on Jan. 28, 1942,'' said Waller. "I've been a member of the Chatham Artillery over 50 years.''

Waller is also a past president of the Savannah Volunteer Guard, which like the Chatham Artillery, provides scholarships and contributed $25,000 to the World War II Memorial on River Street.

He was also on the committee that had a veteran's monument built in his lifelong home of Bloomingdale.

"We do have some veterans from Bloomingdale that sacrificed the supreme sacrifice,'' says Waller, whose brother, Ron, was on Bloomingdale's City Council for 35 years and also was instrumental in getting the monument built. "If you've lived in Bloomingdale five years and you're a veteran, your name can be put on the monument.''

Today, Waller fills most of his time with his many veteran-related activities.

"Well, I feel we need to give back to our community and our country,'' said Waller. "We have the greatest country in the world.''
