Officials working to treat Ga. roads after storm

ATLANTA (AP) - Authorities are clearing ice from roads that became jammed after a winter storm passed through the region.

Georgia Department of Transportation officials have said many highways and interstates in the metro Atlanta region were considered unpassable after hours of snowfall Tuesday afternoon. Authorities tried staving off ice accumulations on local roadways, but GDOT officials said traffic congestion in some places prevented crews from treating impacted roads.

Temperatures aren't expected to rise above freezing Wednesday.

National Weather Service forecasters have said more than 3 inches of snow fell in some regions of north Georgia and snow began falling in middle and south Georgia Tuesday night.

Georgia State Patrol officials said they responded to more than 900 crashes and one fatality had been reported as of Tuesday night.
