GUYTON, GA (WTOC) -

A Guyton couple were arrested and charged in connection with a toddler left home alone and spotted driving recklessly in a church parking lot.

Scott Dufford, 20, and the passenger, Melissa Rossetti, 31, were arrested early Wednesday morning.

Dufford was charged with driving under the influence, loitering and prowling and first-degree cruelty to a child. Rossetti was charged with loitering and prowling and first-degree cruelty to a child.

At about  2 a.m. Wednesday, the Effingham County Sheriff's Office received several calls about someone driving recklessly and doing doughnuts in the parking lot of Country Side Baptist Church on Highway 30. Deputies arrived and spoke with Duford and Rossetti.

ECSO says Dufford was driving under the influence and both were arrested on charges of loitering and prowling.

"During the incident, deputies discovered that the couple had left their 18 month old child home alone at their house," said sheriff's spokesman David Ehsanipoor in a statement. "Sheriff's deputies went to the residence and found the front door open in below freezing temperatures, very loud music coming from the house, and the child alone."

Deputies eventually were able to reach a relative and the child was turned over to that person.

Dufford and Rossetti were taken to the Effingham County Jail. The case will also be referred to the Department of Family and Children Services.
