The Beaufort County School District chose a tentative plan for its attendance zones Thursday night.
The Student Services Committee recommended plan "X", a hybrid of the other proposals. Under plan "X", students in the Beaufort-Port Royal high schools would remain in their current zones, but those in the Moss Creek and Old South area would still be rezoned back to Bluffton instead of Hilton Head Island.
"I think right now, what people are looking for is that we get some plan that keeps students in the same schools for five or six years, that's been the problem for five or six years," said Beaufort County School Board Chairman Bill Evans. "That's been the problem, and most predominately in Bluffton."
"I can appreciate what they're trying to do, to balance these attendance zones, but I do not want the most important thing, which is education of the children, to be thrown aside as secondary to where a person lives," said Beaufort county citizen Dot Gnann.
Dr. Moss will now take plan "X" to a series of town hall meetings. The first is scheduled for Monday at Hilton Head High School.
