Battalion chief retires after 30 years

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

A Savannah Fire and Emergency Services battalion chief is hanging up his helmet.

Fellow firefighters and community leaders gathered for a reception honoring Battalion Chief Dennis Cook on Friday. Cook is retiring after more than 30 years of service to the department and to the citizens of Savannah.

"[It's] kind of like déjà vu. You spend all this time, study, train and you look back and there's constant change that's occurred with the fire service over time," Cook said. "You don't realize until you look back on it, and I think that's really what this is going to give me, a chance to look back and see the changes and maybe help in the future."

Cook said firefighting is in his blood. He is going to take some time to relax, but he might end up applying for another fire chief position in the future.
