Community helps family after fatal fire

The community is coming together to help a Savannah family who lost two children in a house fire on Thursday morning.

Savannah Fire and Emergency Services says a space heater was to blame for the fire at a home on 35th Street.

The outpouring from the community has been tremendous. The family grapples to cope with the loss of their loved ones while trying to find a way to replace their home and belongings.

A church nearby God's Temple of Praise is stepping up to help. Four children and two adults were displaced by the tragic fire.

The church has set up a fund at Carver State Bank under the Melinda Brown Donation Fund per God's Temple of Praise. The church is also collecting donations of clothing and items to help the family at their church. the church has already been contacted by other churches and individuals wanting to donate. Pastor Donald Lowe said it's times like these when a local church needs to step up.

"I believe the churches should be supportive of the community that we are in," Lowe said. "We are here to assist the community and not just overrules and in a situation such as this, this is when the church should come to the forefront."

God's Temple of Praise will be collecting donations from 1-4 p.m. Saturday and Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Everyone needs jackets, children needs uniforms, underclothes, etc. uniform colors are navy and khaki bottoms, navy and white tops.
