SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The Deep South is finally in a deep thaw, and revelers were taking to the streets in downtown Savannah as temeratures rose.

Those who rely on t for their income breathed a sigh of relief.

"We had a lot of cancellations, especially, of course, from the Atlanta area," said Andaz Hotel Frong Desk manager Melinda Ellenberger. "But now people are coming in for the weekend, and we've had a lot of last-minute bookings and a lot of people from Atlanta just ready to get out of the city."

Now that visitors can get into Savannah, they're coming out, and pedicab riders are reporting a brisk business.

"There are a lot of tourists out, which I was surprised this time of year, but there's a lot of tourists out," said Bob Hunt, Pedicab driver.

John Gunther, visiting Savannah from Maine said during the day, Savannah "almost felt like it was summertim."

Business in bars and restaurants is starting to pick up. But the deep freeze wasn't bad for all businesses.

Take Moon River, which stayed open while others closed and saw a steady crowd all week.

"It's alright with me if everybody else is closed because I'm always going to be open," Moon River manager Gene Beeco said.

With the warmer weather coinciding with the end of the week, business owners downtown and across the Savannah area are looking foward to what they hope will be a more pleasant and prosperous time.
