HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Fire crews were battling a blaze at a Huntsville apartment complex Friday night.

The fire broke out at the Sunlake at Edgewater complex off of Zierdt Road around 8:30 p.m.

Heavy amounts of smoke and flames were observed shooting through the roof at a building on Lakefront Drive in the complex. It took a couple of hours for firefighters to get the fire under control.

At least four apartments have significant fire damage. Investigators are working to figure out what sparked the blaze. They hope to have more answers on Monday. People who live in the complex said Friday night was filled with panic and seeing the damage the fire left behind is heartbreaking.

"It's devastating," said Suzanne Cain.  "That's the only word that comes to mind and knowing the people who live in the building makes it even more devastating."

The Red Cross is helping several people who were displaced by the fire.
