SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The 3rd Annual Girls Engineer It Day was held at Woodville Tompkins Tech and Career High School.

The local chapter of the Society of Women Engineers hosted the event to encourage students to get involved in engineering. Organizers honored the achievement of women and girls as they discovered the future through technology. Students in grades 6-12 participated in hands-on projects with local engineers, in order to challenge them to be creative and promote teamwork. Although both genders were allowed and encouraged to attend the event, "Engineer It Day" is aimed at girls and women.

"Everybody that leaves us today has a big smile on their face, and we feel good. This is what we want to do. Our mission with the Society of Women Engineers is really to prove that engineering is a feasible career path for women," said a member of SWE.

There were around 200 students participating in the event last year. This year, there were almost 350.
