Fire leaves more than 40 without a place to live in DeKalb County

More than 40 people are looking for a new place to live after a massive fire destroyed their apartments in DeKalb County.

The fire happened at the Sugar Creek Apartments on Bouldercrest Road, around 10 p.m. last night.

Twenty-five of the 204 units were destroyed; most by fire last night, the rest demolished by heavy equipment this morning; leaving renters with only what they had on their backs when they fled the flames.

Firefighters worked around stunned residents of the low income housing.

According to renters, the company managing the apartments did not require them to have renters insurance.

People living in the building tell terrible tales of panic and chaos.

Many just heard a commotion, and did not knowing what was going on, until they saw smoke and flames spreading toward their apartments.

Renters say, no alarms could be heard, and firefighters didn't hear them either.

"If there were alarms that were going off, we couldn't hear them for screams of help that were going on from this front balcony," said Cpt. Eric Jackson, with the DeKalb County Fire Department.

Jackson explained the first four companies on the scene went directly into rescue mode, forgoing any kind of fire suppression.

"Our firefighters made in excess of ten rescues; I think that's phenomenal considering the obstacles that we had facing us," said Jackson.

With no firewalls or breaks in the buildings construction, firefighters had but moments to get everyone out.

As a result of their bravery, no one lost their lives; not even a baby pulled out of an apartment by a firefighter.

Putting the fire out was a different story.

Firefighters struggled to get enough water pressure to attack the fire. In the end, the entire structure was a loss.

Sunday morning, crews demolished the few remaining apartments that did not completely burn up.
