AMITE, LA (WAFB) -
Jury selection began Monday in the trial of a double murder suspect.
Giles McGhee, 53, of Independence, is accused of killing Temeka Muse, 27, and her boyfriend, Karum Smith, 39, in 2012. McGhee is charged with two counts of first-degree murder.
Judge Bruce Bennett will preside over the trial. Assistant District Attorney Jeff Johnson is prosecuting the case.
The Hammond Police Department said the victims were shot to death while they were sleeping. They were found dead inside a home on Mallard Drive in Hammond on April 5, 2012 by Muse's 14-year-old daughter.
Neighbors said McGhee was Muse's ex-boyfriend and possibly got into the house with a key. They added they did not hear any gunshots and believe the pair may have been shot as storms passed through the area the night before.
McGhee was later arrested in Baton Rouge while driving Muse's car.
