SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Every time he walks out his back door, Chuck Smith is reminded of his passion.

"I was always interested,'' he says, "in nature.''

Now, in addition to being surrounded by it, Smith is very involved in trying to preserve and protect nature as former president and still an active member of the Skidaway Island chapter of the Coastal Conservation Association.

"We are the voice of the coastal recreational fishermen,'' he says. " We advocate for scientifically based decision making to conserve the resource and protect the public's right to fish.''

When he's not catching fish out of the lagoons in and coasts around The Landings, Smith spends roughly 40 hours a week helping to protect those waters.

"I was very lucky because it gave me a purpose,'' said Smith, who was CCA president from 2000 until 2007. "I think we all have to have a reason to get out of bed in the morning. And I find today I wish there were more hours in the day to pursue environmental stewardship.''

A former chairman of the Skidaway Audubon, Smith received that organization's Environmental Stewardship Award last year and for years has helped coordinate its annual kids fishing derby.

In all of his volunteer efforts, he draws on skills built during a career in sales at Proctor & Gamble, which included working on the launch of Liquid Tide.

"I'm tactical. I like to put points on the board. I'm not a strategic thinker,'' he says. "I believe in continual training and development. I'm excited about the future and i want to be part of it and I want to make things better to the extent that I can within reasonable limitations.''
