NORTH, SC (WIS) -

Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office Sheriff Leroy Ravenell will not be bringing charges against a 24-year-old North woman who investigators say fatally shot her boyfriend during a domestic violence incident early Sunday morning.

"Based on the evidence at the scene, autopsy results, and witness statements, this victim feared for her life during the physical assault she endured early Sunday morning," said Ravenell.

Ravenell says officers were called to the home just after 1:30 a.m. to investigate the shooting death of a 24-year-old.

When deputies arrived to the Woodford Road home, they were met by the woman who said she was being beaten and dragged when the fatal shot was fired.

"Our investigation indicates the man became angry when he located paperwork in the woman's purse from another jurisdiction where the man was listed as a suspect," said Ravenell. "When the couple started arguing, the woman wanted to make a call to have her mother pick her up but the man refused her access to the phone."

The sheriff says the woman made it out of the house to the yard, but the male dragged her back inside.

"Once inside the home, the man struck the woman in the back of her head and threw her to the floor," said Ravenell. "The man's grandfather came out of his bedroom and told his grandson to stop hitting her and to leave the house."

According to Ravenell, the woman found a handgun in the home and fired a shot that hit a cordless drill. The man then charged and grabbed the woman. That's when he was shot in the stomach, the sheriff said.

The man later died.

Authorities have not released the names of those involved.
