Monday marks the beginning of Severe Weather Awareness Week in Georgia.
Each day a different severe weather event is highlighted. Monday is Family Preparedness Day. The American Red Cross urges people to have a plan for every weather event and to ensure everyone in the household knows that plan.
"You need to have those plans in place for all different types of disasters – floods, tornadoes, severe weather [and] lightning storms. Each one you plan a little differently, but have those plans in place now. Today is the time to do it," said Sharyn Baggett, disaster program manager with the American Red Cross.
Items for an emergency kit include: water, food, flashlight and batteries.
