South Effingham High on alert after threat

EFFINGHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

The Effingham County Sheriff's Office is on high alert after a threat to South Effingham High School.

Deputies aren't saying what the message was or naming the Effingham County business where they found it scrawled on a wall. But they say the message spelled out an imminent threat to safety at the school.

Deputies do not believe the threat is credible, however.

"We're going to make sure all students are safe," Effingham County Sheriff's office spokesman David Ehsanipoor said. "At this time, there's no reason to believe anything's going to happen. There's no reason to panic. There's no reason to take your kids out of school."

The principal of South Effingham High sent an email this evening to students, parents and staff telling them the sheriff's office alerted the school to the threat, which the principal called "unsubstantiated."

Deputies think chances are, the message was a juvenile prank. Still, starting Tuesday, they're putting in extra security measures in place here at the school.
