SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Students, family, and friends came out to the Savannah Theatre for the book launch and public reading featuring Savannah's youngest published authors.

The event is sponsored by a local nonprofit called the Deep Center and featured students from 14 public middle schools who participated in Deep's award-winning writing program, The Young Author Project, during the fall semester.

"I love it because I love writing, and I love writing with other people and kids and getting better and hearing other people's works and being inspired and I always wanted to write, and this is just something of a lifetime that not many people get to have that I am grateful that I have." said Kendraya Jones, Mercer Middle School student.

200 middle school authors from across the district participated in the project. Their works are published in one of four books.

42 finalists chosen by their peers read their poems at the showcase tonight.
