SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

It was a busy night for Savannah firefighters after being dispatched to battle two separate house fires.

The first one was at a duplex on West 35th Street that left three people displaced. The Red Cross was called to help a mother and her two children after a blaze destroyed the duplex they lived in around midnight. Fire officials say only one-half of the duplex was occupied and the fire started in the rear corner of the occupied side. There is significant damage and a partial ceiling collapse near where the fire started.

Officials say the fire spread to the attic of the unoccupied side as well. The cause of the blaze is being investigated. Fire crews say they were able to salvage most of the family's clothing.

A second fire started at a vacant home on Helen Street around 1:30 a.m., destroying the inside. Fire officials are investigating the cause of that fire as well.

Both W 35th and Helen streets had to be shut down while fire crews battled both fires, but both roads have since reopened.
