Hoover Schools to develop new master plan

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

After several months of tough financial decisions, including initially deciding to cut bus service, Hoover City Schools now wants community input regarding its next steps. The idea is to come up with a new master plan for the next five to seven years. Hoover City Schools Superintendant Andy Craig announced at Monday's Board of Education meeting how he plans to make that happen.

Hoover Schools will work with AHO Architects, an architectural firm that specializes in educational facilities. Together they will host focus groups and surveys. This will be used to find the areas most important to the community when it comes to its school system. Then new committees will create a new set of recommendations to guide the school board's decision making.

When FOX 6 News asked Craig if this new effort is in response to backlash the school board received for its initial decision to cut schools bus service, this was his response.

"We're at a point where we've had continued enrollment. We've seen deterioration on the revenue side. So just plotting that course, plotting the next five to seven years, I think it's time to reincorporate the community voice in that process," explained Craig.

Timothy Aho is the President and CEO for AHO Architects. According to Craig, Aho has worked with the school system before. Craig says he was instrumental when the school system addressed redrawing zoning lines a few years back.
