The winter storm in Alabama left lots of people stranded, many of them with no working cell phone. So, are there options for charging your phone without electricity or without using a car charger which pulls from your car's battery? The answer: yes.
Caleb Beams, manager at the Tuscaloosa location of Batteries Plus, says many people have been looking or these types of products, before and after the recent winter weather.
"When the power goes out, it's just a matter of time before the cell phone goes behind it," Beams said. "Now, a lot of people don't even have landlines."
Beams says there are many different products, some that are device-specific, and others that will charge numerous types of devices.
"Basically, it's just an external battery, that will plug into your phone, and allows you to get an extra three or four hours off of it. Some will enable you to charge it completely, some just to talk for a few more minutes."
For example, one charger we found runs on four AA batteries, and is designed to charge devices with a USB connection or with the Apple connection prior to the iPhone 5. The charger is about the size of a deck of cards, and the packaging says it will give you seven hours of extended talk time. FOX6 found this type of charger, including the batteries and two connectors, for about $13.
