CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

Court has adjourned for Tuesday just after opening statements in an elder abuse case.

Eight women, four men and a male alternate were selected Tuesday afternoon in the case. Maria Wiggins and Michael Nesmith are charged with the elder abuse of Wiggins' then 68-year-old mother. Court will resume at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Garden City police say the couple dragged the disable woman around, beat her, starved her, even put locks on the refrigerator so she could not get food. Police say both Wiggins and Nesmith held her captive inside the house so they could steal her social security and disability money.

Police discovered the abuse after the elderly woman went to the hospital with bruises.
