Wilmington residents fear rezoning

Posted: Updated:
SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Wilmington Island residents are relieved the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Planning Commission saved their residential properties from being rezoned commercial. The proposal came from a fellow neighbor who wants to rezone the area, making it a tourist business.

Richard Long owns the Sail Harbor Marina and wants to expand his business with more parking and more boat storage but many residents who live nearby are not happy.

The meeting was filled with concerned neighbors who live near Turner Creek opposing the rezoning proposal.

The owner of the marina wants to add a new pavilion with parking, boat storage and possibly even a trailer park.

After several neighbors spoke against the proposal, the commissioners listened to their concerns and voted against it.

"It's a very dangerous curve where we live and we have seen many people get killed on that road and we just don't need the [extra] traffic," said resident Sally Chandler.

The owner did not want to comment to WTOC after his request was denied.

The proposal will go before county commission and it could still pass however, neighbors say they will attend that meeting as well.
