Locals celebrate Facebook anniversary

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Facebook is launching a new app called Paper; a flip board set up that is all about the visual experience. This is just the latest venture from the social media giant, which turned 10 years old today.

Friend requests, status updates and poking are terms that were foreign to us 10  years ago, but now they are now part of our daily lives.

"It's changed our whole vocabulary that's for sure," said Facebook user Billy Greer.

A site that some believed in the beginning was just for the younger generation and would eventually fade out like the once famous Xanga and Myspace sites, now, Facebook users range from teens to grandparents.

"That's what I thought at first and now there are people who are 70 years old," said  Facebook user Wilfrido Chavez.

It's not just being used to catch up with old friends. Now Facebook is a promotion tool. Many use it for businesses, products, the media and even rock stars.

Billy Greer has played for the band Kansas for the last 40 years and he says since Facebook, they've been able to keep track of their fan base.

"We have over a million likes on the Kansas Facebook page," said Greer.

Just when you thought everyone had a Facebook, some people are just now jumping on the band wagon.

"I was out of the loop, so I was like it's time to get in," said Chavez.

Now many are curious to see if Facebook will be able to stay ahead of the curve for the next ten years.
