Doctor, officer testify in elder abuse case

Posted: Updated:

A doctor for Candler Hospital was the first to testify Thursday in the trial for a couple charged with elder abuse.

The doctor testified about the victim's condition during her hospital stay. The first responding officer for the Garden City Police Dept. is now testifying.

Maria Wiggins and Michael Nesmith are charged with the elder abuse of Wiggins' then 68-year-old mother.

Garden City police say the couple dragged the disable woman around, beat her, starved her, even put locks on the refrigerator so she could not get food. Police say both Wiggins and Nesmith held her captive inside the house so they could steal her Social Security and disability money.

Police discovered the abuse after the elderly woman went to the hospital with bruises.
