Doctor, officer testify in elder abuse case

Posted: Updated:

A Candler Hospital doctor and an investigating police officer with the Garden City Police Dept. testifiy on Thursday in an elder abuse case.

Maria Wiggins and her boyfriend Michael Nesmith face charges for the abuse of Wiggins then 69 year old mother, Caroline Thomas.

The state continues to call on its witnesses starting with a doctor from Candler Hospital who testified about Thomas' condition when she arrived at the hospital on June 26, 2012.

The doctor said he observed bruising and scrapes on her body. He also conducted a scan and determined she was suffering from medical issues consistent with what could be caused by dehydration and malnourishment. He also testified she had muscle break down that was most likely consistent with trauma, like beating.

Next on the stand was a former Garden City Police officer who was the responding officer the day police were called to the hospital in June of 2012.

The jury also heard from a Garden City Police investigator on the case who explained to the jury how he determined the bruising Thomas suffered from was consistent with abuse rather than a fall based on the specific locations of the marks. The investigator also testified about the harsh conditions of the home Thomas was living in.
