STATESBORO, GA (WTOC) -

The Statesboro Police Dept. and the Bulloch County Sheriff's Office will pool some resources and people in hopes they can target crime from a new perspective.

The two agencies announced the formation of a crime suppression team. It will consist of four city police officers, five sheriff's investigators, and three uniformed deputies, including a K9 handler.

According to a joint statement, the team will have several purposes:

1) Provide proactive, focused law enforcement activities aimed at reducing major crime trends countywide
2) Increasing law enforcement's presence in areas with higher than normal crime statistics
3) Investigating drug related violations which tend to breed other types of criminal activity
4) Serving arrest warrants on wanted persons in an effort to ensure that recidivist criminals cannot continue their criminal activities.

"With that combined number of officers, we can target high crime areas with an increased presence," said Bulloch County Sherrif's Office Chief Deputy Jared Akins said.

In addition, they plan to target crime trends such as burglaries, robberies, and entering autos to find repeat offenders, no matter what jurisdiction.

"Most of the time, the person doing burglaries over here is the same person doing them over there and the same person selling drugs over there is selling them over here," he noted.

Since the operation began Feb. 4, the team has already arrested nine people in three separate cases.
