Family remembers boys who died in fire

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Michael Reed Sr. got a call in the middle of the night.

There'd been a fire and his children had been inside.

"It can't be them," he remembers thinking, "Not them. They [are] alright."

Reed's sons, Maleek and Michael, ages five and six, died in that fire on Savannah's West 35th Street near Burroughs Street.

A week after the fire, family, friends and neighbors gathered Thursday night to remember the boys with a candlelight vigil.

Amid the rain, they found cold comfort. They don't think the boys ever woke from their beds.

They sang hymns at a makeshift memorial of flowers and stuffed animals set up around the basketball goal where the brothers played.

They remembered better times, how much Maleek loved his bike, how good the boys were at basketball, how fast they could run.

The brothers were all energy, friends and family say, all boy, going 90 miles an hour.

"I mean they loveable, though," Michael Reed Sr. said. "I miss them so much."

The boys' funeral will be held Saturday at 4 p.m. at God Temple of Praise.

A fund for the boys has been set up at Wells Fargo Bank. It's called, "My Little angels Michael and Maleek."
